The Somerset Branch of CPRE covers:- Somerset County Council

Intense public concern for the countryside, which began to be expressed in the early 1980's, has led to developing interest in its future protection, and therefore to growing membership of environmental organisations such as the CPRE.
Somerset is valued for its unique character which includes the peace and tranquillity, darkness at night and the variety of landscape and wildlife. These elements are, however, combined with a strong tradition of agriculture and industry, which must not be decried, but made more sustainable.
Three of the major areas for concern in Somerset are Quarrying, Transport and Protection of Landscape, all of which need to be treated with sensitivity and a view to sustainability.
Quarrying
Quarrying for building materials has long been a major industry in the county. CPRE is concerned about the modern methods which so often lead to empty shells where once hills existed. Development of quarrying must take into account the after use of these sites in addition to the control of planning applications to continue operations.
Transport
This has become a national problem and Somerset CPRE is investigating a programme of alternatives to the traditional solution of further road building. Concentration on rail and public transport must be a priority for this government and the local authorities.
Whilst some by-pass projects on existing roads may be welcome to protect villages, the danger is that the developers then use the greenfield site in between the village and the by-pass, which then creates further problems. There is also clear evidence that the new roads create new traffic, so that the short term solution becomes in itself a longer term problem.
Protection of Landscape
Whilst tourism is an important industry in Somerset, there is a danger of it damaging the very qualities of the county that led to its development. There will be particular pressure over the next 15 years arising from the predicted level of net inward migration to the county, leading to a proposed 50,000 new homes.
Some landscape safeguards exist in the form of AONB's, SSSI's, ESA's, and Special Landscape Areas and pressure to maintain and increase these areas must be continued.
We place the highest priority on this part of our work, as we believe that every erosion, no matter how small, is an irreparable step.
The role of Somerset CPRE is to act as a watchdog to the County and District Councils.
We will support their plans when we believe them to be right and fair, but we will become the proverbial thorn in the flesh when they act in a way which damages the countryside and character, and thence the long term viability of our beautiful county.
We form part of, and are supported nationally by the Campaign to Protect Rural England which was formed in 1926.
.
The objective of Somerset CPRE is to promote and encourage for the benefit of the public, the improvement, protection and preservation of the countryside of Somerset, (excluding Exmoor which is looked after by the Exmoor Society), and its towns and villages and the better development of the rural environment.
The Somerset Branch of CPRE now has approximately 600 members. There is a Branch of CPRE in every county in England, the majority of which, like ourselves, are autonomous charities
