Our message to candidates in Somerset local elections – May 2022

The May 2022 local elections are crucial to the future of Somerset.  Candidates will go on to run the new Somerset Unitary Authority, due to be set up in 2023.  We are asking all candidates to pledge their commitment to Somerset’s countryside.

It is crucial that the countryside and rural issues are at the forefront of the minds of our new Councillors. We are calling on all candidates to commit to:

• finding local, countryside solutions to the climate emergency
• ensuring our planning system works for people, nature and the environment
• Improving rural sustainable transport
• a cleaner countryside
