Hugh Williams, our Chair, attended a Royal Garden Party at Buckingham Palace in May.

King Charles is the patron of CPRE, the countryside charity.  Every year, CPRE receives a handful of tickets for a Royal Garden Party and all Local CPREs are invited to nominate volunteers to attend. This year, our CPRE Somerset Chair, Hugh Williams, was very lucky to be chosen, along with other volunteers from the CPRE Network and staff from the national charity.

On a sunny day in May, Hugh and his wife, Lynn, made their way to Buckingham Palace.  This was during the week of VE day commemorations so London was busy! They were thrilled to be there, but were even more delighted when news came that the CPRE guests had been specially selected to meet the King in person.

Hugh took the opportunity to tell the King of the amazing work done by CPRE Somerset volunteers.

'I told the King about our hundreds of litter volunteers of all ages and backgrounds who are working hard to clean up Somerset. The King said that litter was a pet hate of his and he couldn't understand why people dropped litter. He was impressed to hear how so many people in Somerset were actively trying to improve their environment.'
Hugh Williams, Chair of CPRE Somerset

CPRE would be nothing without our volunteers. It’s wonderful that Hugh, who is one of our most hardworking volunteers, enjoyed this special day out as a recognition of his contribution. What makes it extra special is that he was able to sing the praises of our many other volunteers to the King himself!
