The Government has announced that, by 2027, solar panels are to be fitted on all new-build homes in England.

On 6th June, Ed Miliband, the Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero said “Today marks a monumental step in unleashing this rooftop revolution as part of our Plan for Change, and means new homeowners will get lower bills with clean home-grown power.”

The proposed change will be included in the Future Homes Standard, to be published in the autumn. The Future Homes Standard will amend building regulations to require solar panels on all new homes –  with some exceptions where new homes are surrounded by trees or in shade. The change will ensure energy efficient homes, cut bills and boost the nation’s energy security.

A campaign win – thanks to you!

In the past two years, thousands of CPRE supporters have taken part in our Rooftop Revolution campaign. Together we have been calling on the government to set new and ambitious targets for clean energy across the country. In January this year, over 10,000 CPRE supporters backed our call for the government to adopt the Sunshine Bill – a law that would see solar panels installed on all new suitable homes.

'Here in Somerset, we are constantly facing large applications for solar farms. They are industrialising our landscapes and taking precious farmland out of food production. It’s a complete “no brainer” to have more solar on rooftops, so we are pleased that the voices of so many CPRE members and campaigners have finally been heard by the Government. We have all been shouting it from the rooftops and it has worked! Next, we hope to see solar panels as standard on industrial roofs and warehouses – and even over large car parks. The rooftop revolution is coming and if this can take the pressure off our countryside, it’s a win-win.'
