General election 2024 – our message to candidates

Somerset is on the frontline of our cost of living, housing, nature and climate crises. We need our next MPs to champion policies that address these huge challenges – and we have put them at the heart of our manifesto. Can you help us to ask for a beautiful and thriving countryside for all?

The countryside is vital for our future.  The climate emergency and decline in nature pose an existential threat to our countryside and have enormous implications for how we use land across the country. We are calling on all candidates and political parties to recognise the value of the countryside and its essential role in answering our nation’s challenges.

We want candidates to pledge to:

• fix the broken housing market in rural communities

• recognise the importance of the countryside next door

• start the rooftop renewables revolution

• reform the planning system to serve both people and planet

Our full manifesto for the next government explains the policies needed to deliver this in greater detail.  We will be writing to all Somerset candidates before the general election to urge them to support these policies and to take our affordable housing pledge
