Cycling campaigner’s family helping to restore signposts in his memory

We welcome a generous donation to our Fingerpost Fund from the family of Mike Ginger, a well known local cycling campaigner.

Mike Ginger spent his whole life trying to improve cycling. During his career, Mike created many cycle paths, cycling guides, developed safety initiatives and created family cycling events. When he retired, he moved to Taunton and founded the Taunton Area Cycling Campaign (TACC), a voluntary group campaigning for safer, better and more cycling in Taunton.

Mike’s daughter, Kate Ginger told us “After a lifetime of designing and building cycle routes, Dad moved to Taunton from Bristol so he could spend his retirement cycling in the local countryside. Friends came from Bristol to join him on his rides. He never stopped promoting cycling. He researched and published the Taunton Cycling Map and created the Foxglove Cycle Trail around Taunton”

Mike’s long lasting legacy

Very sadly, Mike passed away in October 2025.  In recognition of Mike’s love of the Somerset countryside, his family has made a generous donation in Mike’s memory, so that we can continue our work to restore cast iron road signs across Somerset.

'Having known Mike for over 10 years through TACC I know how passionate Mike was about the Somerset countryside. He would regularly cycle the lanes of Somerset and knew all the best routes to enjoy the wealth of wildlife and natural beauty of the county. This donation to the Signposts project contributes to a cause that was dear to his heart – to get more people out on their bikes and help them find their way to all the quaint villages, hidden coombes and misty moors’'
Vicky Briggs, Taunton Area Cycling Campaign

We are deeply honoured to receive this generous donation from Mike ’s family.  Mike made a massive difference to cycling during his life, and now his legacy will be helping to keep our Somerset countryside special, by maintaining these iconic landmarks for everyone to enjoy.

How you can help

If you know of a Somerset fingerpost that looks the worse for wear, please tell the local Parish or Town Council about it and encourage them to email admin@presomerset.org.uk for information on how to apply for a grant. Applications must come via a Parish or Town Council within the county of Somerset.

Donate to our Fingerpost Fund

A donation of £250 is enough to fund one grant to a Parish Council to help them with costs of restoring one fingerpost.  Repairs can be very costly, especially if new parts are needed or welding is required, so our grants are essential.
