Somerset’s signposts are special! These iconic cast iron fingerposts are a much-loved feature of our Somerset landscape and we want to ensure they are here to stay. Can you help support our Fingerpost Fund?

When modern road signage was introduced across England in the 1960s, Somerset was one of the very few counties that did not remove their old cast iron fingerpost signs. These iconic and much loved features are now a familiar favourite in the Somerset landscape . But – many of them are showing their age and are in a sorry state.

Somerset Council can no longer afford to repair these signs, and Parish & Town Councils are having to foot the bill, which can be very expensive.

CPRE Somerset is a small charity but we are trying to help because we cherish these special features of our rural landscape. We offer small grants of up to £250 per fingerpost so that Parish & Town Councils can look after their fingerposts.

Demand for our grants has been overwhelming and we really need your support so we can offer more help to local communities restore more of these beauties to their former glory.  That’s why we have set up a JustGiving page for anyone who would like to donate to our Fingerpost Fund.  Your donation will help to keep our Somerset countryside special, by maintaining these iconic landmarks for everyone to enjoy.
