Meet Scott, the litter volunteer cleaning up Merriott every day
Say hello to Scott. He’s just one of our hundreds of litter volunteers in Somerset but he is making a real difference.
Scott lives in the beautiful village of Merriott in South Somerset. He signed up as one of our litter volunteers in April 2024 and since then he hasn’t looked back! We were able to supply him with his own litterpicking kit, thanks to generous sponsorship by SUEZ.
Scott goes out with his dogs every day and when he does, he picks up any litter he can find. He also clears up any dog poos he comes across – not a nice business.
We asked Scott to keep a record of the amount of rubbish he clears up so we could get an idea of the difference he is making in Merriott. So far, Scott has collected 357.5 litres of rubbish – that’s more than a standard bathtub could hold. He has also cleared up 150 dog poos so far. We think that is a pretty heroic (and smelly!) thing to do!
As well as tidying the village himself, Scott is also spreading the word and trying to prevent litter and dog mess. He has reported the worsening dog mess problem, some of which is on the well-used ‘Parrett Trail’ footpath, to the Parish Council. They have mentioned the problem in the monthly ‘Merriott Messenger’ newsletter. Scott has also asked for a couple of new Dog Waste Bins in the village at problem locations, funded by the Parish Council. In addition he has asked them to contact Somerset Council to request two more litter bins in the worst litter hotspots.
Encouragingly, Scott has recently seen more people out litterpicking in the village. Litterpicking can be addictive -and it might even be contagious!
