Mariella Frostrup – the permacrisis of 2022

Permacrisis – there’s no better time to make our mark.

This was the theme of the inspiring address which CPRE Somerset’s President, Mariella Frostrup, gave at our AGM in November 2022.  Mariella was broadcasting from the Eden project that week so was unable to join us in person but she recorded a video message especially for our members.

Permacrisis has been announced as the word of 2022, chosen by Collins Dictionary.  It is defined as “an extended period of instability and insecurity”.  Mariella spoke for all of us when she described the fast moving political upheavals of this last year. The cost of living crisis affects us all and the climate crisis feels worryingly close after our hot, dry summer.

Mariella looked back at CPRE’s origins in 1926 when our countryside felt under threat and access was poor for “the common man”. Then, as now, difficult times are when CPRE can really show its strength – especially by working with others.
